Some of the games within the WWE 2K series have 2K MT included campaigns, where players are able to customize their wrestlers and help them navigate the trials and tribulations which are faced by the rising stars of the world of wrestling. These career modes, admittedly contain some RPG fundamentals, such as character creation, dialog choices, and crucial making (though the actual significance of these options can be debated).

Through these career modes that may differ from game to game, players have the chance to feel the joy of starting as a lowly beginner, and eventually achieving the highest levels as they enjoy a lot of the same gameplay that is available in other game modes, although it's not getting the same amount of post-launch assistance via WWE 2K DLC.

The career path is growing, according to comments from WWE's Stephanie McMahon in a recent earnings call. According to GameSpot, McMahon revealed that a staggering 80% of WWE fans are "gamers," noting that this should be capitalized upon by investing more in game development.

When discussing the successes in the mobile games offered by WWE, McMahon stated that the organization would be announcing a newly-developed role-playing games "soon." It's not clear at present what similarities this role-playing game will have to the WWE 2K games, if there are any similarities.

Because the term "role-playing" is a term that's intentionally broad and vague, it's hard to know what the next version of a WWE game might look like. It's clear that the MyRise career mode in WWE 2K22 did an excellent job in terms of telling a compelling story.

So it's possible that the WWE sees potential in a stand-alone, narrative-driven experience. On the other hand it's possible that this "role-playing" game could be a simple mobile title similar to something like "Episodes", which is more akin to an art book than a modern, AAA game.

If the WWE decides to MT 2K23 move forward with an enormous, high-budget, and expansive RPG on consoles and PC this would be something completely new in the realm of sports video games. Numerous other sports franchises, like NBA 2K, launch with an action-packed campaign that includes RPG elements.
